足の外科虎の穴

先日某英語論文がJournal of Foot & Ankle Surgery (JFAS)にめでたく一発acceptされました!(^^)!。先月に引き続きIF付き国際誌に連続acceptされ、最近ちょっとモテ期のようです。

2014年6月19日 Submitted to Journal→ With Editor (MS # JFAS-14-231)… なんと投稿直後にEditor AssignedとなりMS #をいただきました。2013年12月26日に投稿した論文のMS #が391 (推定総投稿数400前後?)なのに対し、2014年6月19日に投稿した論文のMS #が231なので、この調子だと今年の推定総投稿数は500超でしょうか。IF付きの国際誌への投稿が激増しているのが、MS #で見てとれます(飽くまで私見で根拠はないですが… )。

ここでちょっと珍しいことが発生。Key wordsとしてcallus distraction: external fixator: hemicallotasis: metatarsal: traumatic hallux varusを入力したのですが、ダウンロードしたManuscript draftではcallus distraction: deformity correction: external fixator: great toe: metatarsalと2語入れ替わっているのに気付きました。これは一体何を意味するのか… 一般にEditorやReviewerが題名を直接手直しした場合はacceptされる確率が非常に高いと言われています。JFASの投稿規定にDo not repeat words or terms here if they are already used in the title (since this reduces the opportunity to use different words that could be included in electronic searches, thus diminishing the likelihood of an electronic link to your published article)とあるように、Editorが論文をチラ見してacceptableと判断し、論文掲載後のネット検索により引っ掛かるよう予め変更したと考えられます。当時「こりゃあー行ける!」と喜んだのですが、ここからが長かった…

7月15日… 毎日暇さえあればスマホで論文のstatusをチェックしていましたが、なかなかWith EditorからUnder Reviewとならないため1回目のお伺いメールをEditorに送信しました(詳しくはこちら)。

7月16日… 翌日早速Assistant Editorを経由してEditorから返事が来ました。

え”っ!、the invited peers have commentedってどういうこと? With Editorの状態なのに査読は完了? それとも私の英文解釈の間違いでReviewerにはまだ回されていない? よく解らないのでEditor Kickの覚悟もしながら数日待つことにしました。

7月22日… Editorより何の音沙汰もなし… 実はこの論文はAdult forefoot reconstructionの新しい手術手技・知見(metatarsal hemicallotasis)を含んでいるので、とにかく1日でも早く国際誌に載せworld’s firstとしたい気持ちで正直焦っていました。そこで禁断の催促メールをEditorに送信。

We submitted the manuscript, JFAS-14-231, titled “XXXX of YYYY with ZZZZ,” on June 19 for possible publication in The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery.

Thank you for your recent e-mail of July 16. However, we have not heard from you since then. We really don’t want to lose too much time before the publication of our work, and want to know the present situation. We feel that further delay is unusual and inapposite treatment to any submitted manuscripts. Could you let us know whether our manuscript will be sent out for external in depth review or not ?

7月24日 Accept… 朝スマホで論文のstatusをチェックしたらWith Editorだったのに、いきなりUnder Review→ Required Reviews Completed→ Decision in Processをすっ飛ばして一発acceptとなったようである。掲載料が目的の一部の悪質なOpen Access Journalとは異なり、70年以上の歴史を持つJFASは一発acceptとは言え、きちんと査読をしているので安心しました。Editorのコメントは前回と一緒(コピペ ?)なので割愛し、以下は2名のReviewer様の査読コメント。

Reviewer #1: A well-written manuscript, and adequately illustrated. It seems that all of the required elements for publication are present. However, I do not think that the case is that unusual in terms of technique…callus distraction augmented with an additional screw (a good idea in this case) and combined with initial shortening and stabilization of the second ray (also a good idea). It doesn’t look like much first ray length was gained after the initial surgery, although transverse plane correction is evident. Overall, a nice case to see and a good result, but nothing earth shattering. Worthy of publication if you have the page space.

Reviewer #2: I have commented on numerous reports for JFAS, and this is a really good one relative to most initial manuscripts that I am asked to review. The case, which hinges on angular correction using a small rail to gradually correct varus misalignment, is one that I think surgeons, even experienced foot surgeons will appreciate. I like the way the author/s added the adjunct screw to protect the new bone callus at about 9 weeks. That was a valuable intervention. I also think that the decision to shorten the second metatarsal was wise, and reduced the necessity of prolonged callus distraction of the first metatarsal. I recommend publication.

こんなに英語論文で褒められたのは未だかつてないです!(^^)!。もちろん私の英語力がnative並みであるはずもなく、丸善英文校正サービスLightを毎回利用しています。上記のearth shattering (ウルトラC)の意味も解らないレベルでも、英文を書き上げる根性と校正料金さえ惜しまなければ国際誌でもなんとかなります(手術にはセンスとイマジネーション、それとちょっとした勇気が必要ですが… )。ちなみに最近私は毎週土曜日のEテレのプレキソ英語(Sushitown)で英語の特訓をしています(笑)。

8月1日 Offprint Order… これまた早し! もしかしたら先月acceptされた論文と一緒の号数に載ったりして… どうせなら別々にして2冊分の雑誌が欲しいなぁ。

8月28日 Proofs available… Please respond within 48 hours… 毎度の48時間ルールである。紙面の都合と思われるが足部の正面像が全て横を向いており、イマイチ見にくい。画像を90°回転させたいのだが “Changes that significantly alter the content of the article, such as new figures and tables or rewritten sections, will only be considered at this stage with the Editor’s approval.” 「滅多なことはするな、面倒なことになるよ 」と予め釘を刺されている… 論文の大勢に影響もなく、e-pubが遅れるのはまずいので今回も訂正なしで返答。と思いきや、送信直前に誤字を発見… しかもタイトルなので、さすがにこれはいただけない。Gradual Correction of Traumatic Hallux Varus With with Metatarsal Hemicallotais (lower case)と変更を要請し、annotated proofとともに送信しました。

9月6日 Proof available online… 論文②の実質的なゴールに到達。6月19日投稿、9月6日e-pubなので実質2か月半でのpublicationである。PubMedやGoogle Scholarに論文が掲載されているのを見ると、改めて今までの努力が実ったことを実感する。

今回は結果的に投稿後5週で驚速一発acceptという結果でしたが、なぜ論文のstatusが6月19日の投稿日から7月24日のaccept当日までずっと変わらずWith Editorだったのかは分かりません。こちらとしては順調にUnder Reviewとなれば普通に3~4か月は待つのですが、Editorがもし事情を知らなかったならば、What a rash and impetuous Japanese ! (なんやこの日本人せっかちやなぁー、ホンマ無茶やで)と思ったかもしれません。

この論文がacceptされたことにより、私の通算peer review英語論文の勝率は4割1分7厘となりました。次の具体的な目標は勝率5割を達成してAクラスに入ることと、足の外科専門誌の最高峰であるFoot Ankle Intへの論文掲載でしょうか(了)。

2016年2月23日 Print publication… 初回投稿後1年8か月、アクセプトから1年7か月かかって忘れた頃にprint publicationとなった。Case reportの待期期間が長いのは仕方がない、載せていただいただけでも感謝、感謝。
